    1. Enter safe mode by holding the F8 key as your computer starts up. If you receive a “stuck key” warning, reboot your computer and repeatedly tap the F8 key while the computer starts instead of holding the key. This must be done before the Windows logo appears, or it will not work.

    2. Select “safe mode” on the “Advanced Boot Options” screen using the arrow keys and press “Enter.” The computer will start in safe mode. Log in to a user account with administrator privileges.

    3. Click the Norton icon on your desktop or select it from the Start” menu. If you are using Norton AntiVirus 2009 or newer, you will receive the warning “Norton cannot start in safe mode. Would you like to start a scan?” Click “Yes” to start the Norton AntiVirus scan. In older versions, additional steps are required.

    4. Select “Run” from the Start menu to open the command prompt if you are using an older version of Norton AntiVirus. “Run” is located in the “Accessories” folder in the Start menu.

    5. Type “navw32 /L” into the “Run” dialog. Press “Enter” to begin a virus scan in safe mode.
